This website is a window on Swiss painting. The focus is on the diversity of artistic expression and the innovative and iconographic richness it reveals. The selection focusses on the period 1900-1950, with selective links to previous and subsequent works.
The approximately 3000 pictures presented here come from two private collections. A large number of the works and many of their authors have so far hardly appeared in the public art scene and have remained unknown to a wider public. The website is a platform for publicising undiscovered, missed and forgotten works.
The collection includes individual works from the category of generally recognised and celebrated Swiss art. They serve as touchstones for the relevance of what is recommended here.
This website is a tool that can be used by researchers and museums. Curators are invited to make discoveries in the diversity of Swiss painting presented here, which they can use for publications and exhibitions.
All the information in the database is updated on an ongoing basis. The provenance of the works is and will continue to be researched. There is also the option of including further private collections.
Information on the artists on this website is directly linked to the SIK-ART database of the Swiss Institute for Art Research.
The database provides uncomplicated access to cultural assets that were previously difficult to access. To ensure that this wealth will also be available in the future in the form of loans, it is planned to transfer a large proportion of the works on display (over 2500 pictures) to a foundation. The Christoph Merian Foundation has significantly supported the development of this database and website with a grant.
The creation of this website was initiated by Christoph Hering, who enriched his proposal for the publication of the paintings in digital form with his collection holdings and who has passionately supported the online presence both creatively and financially. Peter Suter's more than fifty years of collecting and the exhibitions and publications associated with it form the starting point for the overview presented here.
